What to expect during the Rolfing 10 Session Series

Objective of the 10 series: To realign and rebalance all body fascias* so as to……

    ….. reach a lasting:

•    Deep postural balance
•    Ease of movement
•    Realignment of the body blocks (head, torso, pelvis, legs)

As this is achieved, chronic pain is invariably reduced or eliminated.

As we feel less stress and experience greater vitality, we have a better resource for experiencing improved wellness in other aspects of our lives.

Sessions 1-3: Focus on freeing the deep underpinnings of balance and posture from the more superficial myofascial structures that impinge on its free movement. So the work is generally on the larger masses of superficial muscle and fascia.

Session 1: opens breathing for greater vitality (ribs, pelvis, neck, back, all can impinge upon fullness of breathing. Yoga principle: freedom in breathing capacity allows the real therapist (one’s own body) to do its best work.

Session 2: structural realignment of fascias of feet and legs

Session 3: balancing the pelvic and shoulder girdles and other fascia that may be impinging on the deeper structures of fascia.

Sessions 4-7: Now that the more superficial impingements on the deeper structures have been “lifted” off the deeper core structures, these sessions focus on realigning and rebalancing the deepest fascias that relate more to gravity and a connected grounding to the earth. We proceed from the feet upward to the head, session by session. We gain greater grounding effortlessly and a reciprocal lift upward.

Session 4: Starting from the feet again and working upward, this session is a continuation of session 2, but now focusing on the deeper structures (adductors area to the pelvis) that relate to the energetic level often referred to as the root chakra. Gravity can now flow more freely into the ground from the low pelvis.

Session 5: Continuing upward, the deep structures from the pelvis to the mid spine are freed and realigned. The lower spine begins to move more freely. Greater fluid movement is achieved and abdominal organs benefit.

Session 6: We focus now on the deep fascias of the posterior side of the body from the head to the feet. This ensures a balance between the more anterior structures that have been opened from sessions 4 and 5 and these posterior ones (spinal erectors, pelvis, hamstrings, etc.).

Session 7: Good posture means we have an effortless lift upward through our head despite the downward force of gravity. This session focuses on realigning and rebalancing the deep fascias of the neck and head, so that this lift can be experienced.

Sessions 8-10: These sessions are generally aimed at reintegrating (or “knitting together”) the work of the previous sessions. Areas that need more attention are addressed so we feel more as one functional unit.
Our traumas and injuries “dis”integrate us so that the leg that we favor, for example, is not integrated, or working as one unit with the rest of our body. Allowing the continuous webbing of fascia of that leg to “reconnect” to its neighboring fascias is a very important and often overlooked prerequisite to whole body balance and freedom in postural alignment.
These sessions can focus on different areas according to the needs of the individual.

(Photographs taken before and after the Rolfing 10 session series, and months and years after the 10 sessions have ended, demonstrate that the results are long term. )

*Fascia: The organ of shape and structure of our body. Think of saran wrap of different thicknesses shrink-wrapped around all joints and bones, going through bones and muscle, nerve, and all soft tissues, often compressing to rock hardness at areas of trauma or injury. Fascia determines how joints work and how we are aligned.
