Toby Russell - Personal Trainer in Vancouver
As a child, Toby remembers playing outside with neighborhood
friends every day until sundown. She loved to be active and this
desire carried through to her teenage years where she continued to
do so through participation in organized sport as well as
extra-curricular physical activity. A shoulder and knee injury in
her teens pulled her away from physical activity and she followed
her other love, Fashion Design. After graduating from Kwantlen
College’s Fashion Design program, Toby was determined to ‘make it
big’ in the business of fashion. Soon into her career, the stress of
the industry, along with “on the go” eating habits and little
exercise resulted in 40 extra pounds and serious rethinking in her
career choice. It was a trip to the doctor at age 22 that was the
tuning point. Toby’s blood pressure was 160 over 100; that of
someone aged 60. That was more than enough to make positive changes
to revive her health.
Toby Russell, BCRPA PT
Knowing how much she loved exercise and eating healthfully (both being essential for a long healthy life), Toby made it a priority everyday. A complete halt in eating out to making balanced meals at home was the way to get back on track. Toby’s love of physical activity and being around others who were active came flooding back. Her fascination with anatomy, the body’s adaptation to stress and human movement drove her to begin studying fitness theory courses. However, after a torn hamstring injury, Toby found herself in the same situation as a teen and was instructed not to run for 4 to 6 months.
She was shocked and frustrated at the limitations to movement this injury had caused. With support from her physiotherapist and massage therapist, Toby took this as an opportunity to learn, work around the injury and stay fit and healthy at the same time. Following a rehabilitation program and staying on track with nutrition, she was able to restart regular exercise in better shape than before the injury. Toby found continued pleasure in volunteering as a run leader, marshalling at sporting events and being outdoors exercising with friends. Her love of staying fit, recreational triathlons and weight training was a natural progression to choosing Personal Trainer as a career.
