Common Questions
It is perfectly understandable to have questions about your physiotherapy treatments, especially if you're more accustomed to pharmaceutical modalities. Our staff are more than happy to answer any questions you may have, providing you with the information you need to get the most out of your time with us.
Common questions patients have include the following:
What can I expect from a physiotherapy assessment?
In order to provide the best possible treatment plan, our physiotherapists perform an extensive assessment. An appointment for the initial physiotherapy assessment can be booked at any time, with or without a doctor's referral. However some medical plans do require a doctor's referral for coverage, so it's best to check with your provider to assess your coverage requirements.
During this initial assessment, the physiotherapist may review your medical history, including an inspection of medical images like X-rays and MRIs. Both visual and hands-on assessment techniques are used; an accurate diagnosis can lead to a more appropriate and effective treatment plan.
What types of physiotherapy treatment are available?
All kinds of people can benefit from physiotherapy treatments, regardless of age, size, or physical ability. Many types of treatment are available and your physiotherapist will work with you to develop a treatment plan that can best address your concerns.
treatment plans can include direct manipulation through fast and controlled movements, the slower process of mobilization, and pain relieving massage. The specific techniques used are dependent on the individual patient and his or her specific needs.
How is sports physiotherapy different or unique?
Sports related injuries are increasingly common. The types of treatment techniques applied in sports physiotherapy are not necessarily all that different from the type of treatments you'd receive when rehabilitating from an automobile accident, but they're applied in a specific way to relieve tension in the surrounding areas and allow you to "get back in the game." Sports physiotherapy often involves modified exercise programs too, allowing the individual to maintain a level of fitness and strength without causing more damage to the injured area.
Should I combine physiotherapy and exercise?
Yes, physiotherapy and exercise often go hand in hand, however it's important to consult with a trained professional before doing so. A physiotherapist can help develop an exercise regimen that is conducive to the recovery of the injured area without aggravating the existing issue or injury.
Running and physiotherapy
I'm a runner, how can physiotherapy help me?
Running
is an extremely demanding activity on your body. Some of the
most common conditions physiotherapists in Vancouver see are Achilles tendonitis, shin splints, ankle
sprains, patella femoral syndrome and low back pain. Your
physiotherapist can treat these conditions, and a lot more. The more you
run the more often you should make sure your body is in perfect working
order. See: Running and
Sports Physiotherapy.
I have a lot of
stress at my work place. Can physiotherapy help?
Yes, we suggest reading our article on physiotherapy and
occupational stress. You will find making small changes over a
period of time will really decrease your stress at work.
I have chronic back pain, will physiotherapy help me?
It all depends on what is causing the chronic back pain. Our
physiotherapists are extremely skilled and have post graduate training
that is suited for relieving chronic pain. See: chronic pain and physiotherapy.
Time with a physiotherapist
Do I need a Doctor's referral for physiotherapy?
No,
physiotherapy referrals from a doctor are only needed if it’s an ICBC related
treatment or if it's a requirement of your extended health care plan.
Does it make a difference which physiotherapist I see?
We suggest trying
one of our Electra Health Floor physiotherapists because each has their own areas of
expertise; post graduate training, specializations, etc. Should it be needed, our
physiotherapists can easily help you combine your physio treatment with
the help of one of our other practitioners; for instance a massage
therapist or acupuncturist.
Who pays for physiotherapy treatment?
Can you bill my
treatment directly to my insurance company?
At the present time you pay for the physiotherapy treatment and then
we give you a receipt to mail into your insurance company. *if you
pay by credit card most insurance companies reimburse you within 3
weeks. This allows you to receive your credit car rewards, and not be out any money.
Why is physiotherapy important to rehabilitation?
The goal of physiotherapy in this context is to help the patient restore a desired level of comfort and mobility. If someone injures a leg, a cast may help to heal a broken bone, but working through the physiotherapy rehabilitation process is how the patient can walk, run, and play normally again. Physiotherapy treatments help with pain management, as well as the mobility needed to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.
Which practitioner
You have so many therapists, how do I know when I need to see a
physiotherapy practitioner, massage therapist, Rolfer, etc...?
We get this question a lot. The best answer is if you wanted to see a
physiotherapist, start there. At that point if you want to add or try
another practitioner, call the office and talk to Mark Bentz. He will
give you a complimentary phone consultation that can answer your
questions.
What to do if physio insurance coverage runs out
I only have
X amount of insurance coverage for physiotherapy. Can you
recommend another insured service that will compliment my previous
physiotherapy treatments?
Yes, we have 37 professionals on the floor, and this happens all the
time. So let the physiotherapist know your concerns. Or you can just ask Mark,
he
will work with your current physiotherapist to find the right fit.
Does physiotherapy help with weight-loss?
Yes, working with a physiotherapist will give you the necessary tools
to reduce your weight and keep it off. Please read the article entitled
weight-loss and physiotherapy.
Do physiotherapists treat fibromyalgia?
Yes, although
fibromylagia can be challenging to treat, our physiotherapists are
very knowledgeable and experienced with fibromylagia's various stages
and symptoms.
How do physiotherapy and massage complement one another?
Physiotherapy and massage therapy both aim to restore physical function. The majority of manual therapy techniques used to restore and prevent injury are practiced by both professions. Physiotherapy and massage, used together, makes therapeutic and practical sense.
While physiotherapy seeks to restore physical function, massage therapy can also be useful for relieving stress, reducing muscle strain, and alleviating pain. Physiotherapy and massage, used together, will assist recovery from an injury or chronic condition faster; as well as allowing for a more comfortable and manageable recovery.
What is the relationship between physiotherapy and acupuncture?
Acupuncture treatments are designed to stimulate specific nerves in specific ways, encouraging the body to boost its own natural ability to achieve biochemical balance and improve blood flow. This can promote the effectiveness of physiotherapy treatments, because the body is already working more effectively toward its own recovery. Physiotherapy and acupuncture are often used together to assist in the rehabilitative process.
How is physiotherapy different from chiropractic?
Physical therapy is used primarily by patients in a rehabilitative context, working to restore a healthy and comfortable range of movement. Chiropractic treatments are designed mostly to re-align the spine, taking a direct approach to manipulate bones and joints. The two modalities can complement one another for better overall patient wellness. Read more about the relationship between physiotherapy and chiropractic.
