You've likely seen charts that depict the soles of the feet, dividing them into several different colored zones. These are known as reflexology charts and they map out how the varying zones on the feet correspond to different organs and other parts of the body. Reflexology is a form of alternative medicine where the application of pressure to these specific zones can have a direct affect on other parts of the body. Electra Health Floor conveiently offers Reflexolgy in downtown Vancouver.

Reflexology Treatment

hand zones reflexologyThe feet are often the primary focus when it comes to a reflexology treatment, but practitioners may also address different health concerns by applying pressure to specific areas on the hands and ears as well. This is a fully natural Reflexology treatment that does not involve any medications, instruments, oils, lotions, or invasive procedures. That's why reflexology is called a "natural healing art."

Suitably enough, reflexology is also sometimes referred to as zone therapy. The system of zones and reflex areas of the body are "reflected" on the soles of the feet, so when the practitioner applies specific pressure to these zones, a physical change is then exerted on the corresponding part of the body. The techniques the practitioner may include the application of pressure with the thumb, fingers, and hands.

History of Reflexology

While the practice of reflexology is a relatively recent development in the western world, it’s been used for centuries. In fact, there is evidence to suggest that reflexology was used to treat a number of conditions and ailments as far back as Ancient Egypt, dating all the way back to 2330 BCE. That's over four thousand years ago! Reflexology is more commonly associated with China, where evidence of its medical practice has been found to date back to 2704 BCE. It has also been used in such places as Japan since 690 AD. Today, the Electra Health Floor provides reflexolgy in downtown Vancouver. Reflexology isn't something new, it's a proven, effective treatment.

Reflexology is an Alternative Medicine

Reflexology can be used to address a wide range of physical concerns, ailments, and conditions. This is because it is formed on a similar view of the human body as that used in traditional practices like acupuncture. There is a life energy that flows through the body. Called "ki" in Japanese and "qi" in Chinese, this energy can sometimes encounter blockages. Reflexology can alleviate these blockages and re-establish the healthy flow of qi. In essence, applying pressure to the reflexology zones facilitates the body's natural ability to heal itself.reflexology treatment image

For instance, the tips of the toes are usually associated with the head. Appropriate reflexology pressure techniques applied to these areas can be useful in addressing chronic migraines or tension headaches. The heart is mapped to the fleshy part of the sole, just beneath the big toe. As such, this may be the appropriate area of treatment for hypertension and other related heart conditions. There are also zones associated with the stomach, spleen, and intestines, which may be useful in addressing digestive disorders and discomforts.

Reflexolgy Treatment

A typical reflexology treatment session will last between thirty minutes and one hour. This will depend on the nature of the condition treated, as well as other individual differences.A paitent will be asked to sit in a reclining chair with the feet placed in such a way that the practitioner has the easiest access to all areas of the foot. Pressure, stretching, and other movements can then be applied in a systematic fashion by the reflexologist. Some people prefer more, or less pressure, and are encouraged to let the reflexology specialist know about personal tolerances level. At the end of a session, one should emerge with a sense of balance and relaxation.

In Vancouver, Reflexology is a Popualar Form of Alternative Medicine

There is a reason why reflexology is becoming an increasingly popular form of alternative medicine. When implemented by an experienced professional using the right techniques at precisely the right locations, reflexology can be very effective in addressing everything from arthritis and sports injuries to back pain and hormonal imbalances. It has also been used for stress, insomnia, pain management, and mood disorders. Reflexology is a good complementary therapy for post-operative care, palliative care, and care related to pregnancy, both before and after.

It is important to note that while reflexology can be very effective and useful in the treatment of a range of conditions, it is meant to supplement more standard medical care; it is not a replacement for it. For instance, many cancer patients find greater relief and comfort with reflexology, but this does not mean that they should forego more contemporary cancer treatment.

Appropriate for specific treatment and the maintenance of overall wellness, reflexology is a great complementary therapy for patients of all ages, and all walks of life.
