Craniosacral therapy is a technique is used to bring the cranial, spinal, and pelvic structures back into balance. It can also remove blockages that the body’s own physiological forces have been unable to overcome.

One of the hallmarks of craniosacral therapy is the use of a very light touch. The amount of pressure used is seldom more than 30 grams (approx. 1 ounce) and is often more on the order of 5 grams, the weight of a nickel. By using such gentle pressure, our therapists avoid encountering resistance and assist the client’s body to self-correct.

One way of thinking about craniosacral therapy would be to Imagine a hard pull on one of your arms. Your immediate reaction is to resist by holding back against the pull. The use of light touch by our therapist is a way of not engaging the body’s natural tendency to resist change.

The reliance on the inherent self-correcting mechanism of the body is another one of the hallmarks of craniosacral therapy. This approach relies on the body’s own wisdom and desire to move toward homeostasis (balance) to guide the treatment session. Treatment is a cooperative effort between the therapist who is trying to help the system work more effectively and the person receiving craniosacral therapy. For this reason, craniosacral therapy is not only useful for correcting disease, but also for promoting a high level of wellness.

What is craniosacral therapy?

Cranial Sacral Therapy (CST) is a non-invasive, gentle and profound hands-on healing therapy that assists the body’s natural capacity for self-repair. Using a light touch, generally, no more than five grams of pressure, the therapist examines the craniosacral system by making contact with their hand’s on various parts of the body. By using this light touch the therapist can access a core rhythm in the body that is created by the craniosacral system surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

When there are restrictions within this system it will show up as a lack of motion or rhythm. The therapist then uses delicate manual techniques to identify and release restrictions, adhesions and tensions held deep in the body and within the soft tissues that surround the central nervous system. Restrictions are caused by physical or emotional traumas that can be held and stored within our bodies. Once these restrictions are released, the system can return to normal functioning.

Cranial Sacral therapy is used to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. By freeing the central nervous system to perform at its optimum, cranial-sacral therapy naturally eliminates pain and stress, strengthens your resistance to disease, and enhances your health and well being.

What conditions can cranial sacral therapy help with?

Cranial Sacral therapy looks at the whole person and treats the cause of the problems rather than the symptoms. This therapy is highly effective for a wide range of people, and due to the non-invasive and gentle approach, it is suitable for adults, children, elderly, and people in fragile or acutely painful conditions. This therapy influences the musculoskeletal system, the connective tissues, the immune system, the nervous system, the organs, the cardiovascular system, the fluids and the energy systems of the body.

Cranial Sacral therapy has been effective in treating the following conditions:

  • Chronic neck and back pain
  • Migraine Headaches
  • Post-traumatic stress disorders

What can I expect from a cranial sacral therapy session?

Treatment sessions take place in a quiet and peaceful environment, and generally, they are one to one and a half hours long.

On your initial visit, comprehensive case history and assessment will be taken. During the session, you will remain fully clothed while lying supine or side-lying on a massage table. Using a light touch, generally no more than five grams of pressure the therapist evaluates the craniosacral system by making contact with their hands on various parts of the body. By using this light touch the therapist can access a core rhythm in the body and can assess where the rhythm is weak, absent or restricted. When there are restrictions within this system it will show up as a lack of motion or rhythm. Using delicate manual and unwinding techniques, the therapist gently works with the spine, skull, and cranial sutures, diaphragms, and fascia to release restrictions, adhesions and tensions held deep in the body and within the soft tissues. Restrictions are caused by physical or emotional traumas that can be held and stored within our bodies, once released the system can return to normal functioning. Craniosacral sessions are generally deeply relaxing and most people experience a deep and profound feeling of peacefulness and well-being.

The innate wisdom of your body is what guides the session, allowing your body to release and unwind as it needs in order to heal and re-balance.
