Physiotherapy & Exercise

A number of different injuries, both acute and chronic, can be treated with physiotherapy. A professional physiotherapist can not only help to identify the points on the body that require the most attention, but also how to rehabilitate these areas back to health. These sessions, however, can be greatly complemented with the right physiotherapy exercises.

While there are other methods for pain control and pain reduction, it is ultimately better if the body is able to heal in such a way that it is able to cope better with the potential for future injuries, strains, and stresses. This is why a range of flexibility and strength training exercises as part of an overall rehabilitation plan can prove useful. When strength is restored to the affected area, the pain can be more easily managed and movement can become more controlled. Further still, because some period of time can pass between physiotherapy sessions, it is important to take some preventative measures in between. In the time that passes between physiotherapy sessions, it is quite common for patients to experience stiffness in the affected area. This is normal, but appropriate exercises can help to reduce stiffness and encourage a faster and more complete rehabilitation. Vancouver Physiotherapy ExerciseSimilarly, an injury that calls for physiotherapy treatment might also result in an overall reduction in activity in the patient. The patient may have otherwise participated in community sports, but can no longer do so comfortably due to the injury. This can have negative health ramifications, like the loss of muscle tone. Rehabilitative exercises may not be as intense as a more elaborate exercise regimen, but they can help to maintain muscle tone, strength, and flexibility. What sort of exercises can best supplement physiotherapy sessions and other rehabilitation methods? Taking the example of a shoulder injury, which are common in motor accidents, simple curls with relatively light free weights can be useful. These can help to strengthen the muscles that are part of the rotator cuff, as well as other supporting muscles in the area. Basic arm curls can be even more effective when performed while seated on an exercise ball, helping to better achieve balance for the body as well. Another common focal point on the body for physiotherapy treatments is the back. This can be related to acute sports injuries, for instance, as well as chronic back pain caused by long periods of sitting in front of a computer. Exercises for these injuries need not be complex. An example would be to lie flat on your back on the floor with legs straight. Bend one knee upward toward your chest, holding it place with your hands. Hold for about ten seconds, then switch legs. This simple stretching exercise can help to restore flexibility to the back.
