Overcoming Trauma

Written by Vancouver Trauma Counsellor Jennifer McIntosh

What is Trauma?

When we hear the word ‘trauma’ many ideas come to mind, among them: attacks, accidents, bullying, emotional shaming, and/or abuse of any kind. However, trauma has typically been discussed as any sudden, unexpected, and/or uncontrollable event that involves actual or threatened harm to you or to others. Any traumatic event can make you feel trapped in cycles that you just can’t seem to break out of, despite a deep desire to do so.

How Trauma Affects Us

After experiencing a traumatic event, it’s not unusual to fall into a pattern of repeating the same thoughts and feelings in connection with it. This can occur as immediately as days, to as long as months, or years after the event. Some other common reactions are: feeling stuck, isolated, unable to take part in activities you previously enjoyed, and re-experiencing the event with all of the unpleasant physiological characteristics. You may feel as though you are being held back in life. At times, increased substance use may also occur. Another common response to trauma is dissociation. Dissociation can make us feel numb, disconnected and like we can’t trust others or ourselves. Trauma counselling can Help… You may also be experiencing upsetting emotions or frightening re-occurring memories, and/or a sense that you are in constant danger. Luckily, with the right support and counselling, you can gain your sense of security back.

Feeling “Cut-Off”?

Of all of the symptoms related to any post traumatic distress, it’s possible that it is the isolation—the feeling of being “cut-off”—that is most troubling. It is one thing to experience rapid heart palpitations, increased sweating, shortness of breath and irritability, and another when those very symptoms from the trauma cut us off from the people that we love, the activities that we enjoy and the experiences that helped us create and gave our lives meaning. Jean Baker Miller and Irene Stiver have researched psychological isolation. They write:

“We believe that the most terrifying and destructive feeling that a person can experience is psychological isolation. This is not the same as being alone, but a feeling that one is locked out of the possibility of human connection and of being powerless to change the situation. In the extreme, psychological isolation can lead to a sense of hopelessness and desperation. People will do almost anything to escape this combination of condemned isolation and powerlessness.”

Types of Trauma Counselling

Because it is difficult to independently process trauma, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR) can be introduced and provide meaningful results in a relatively short amount of time. Studies show clients can have such positive results after just three (3) sessions that they no longer qualify for post traumatic stress disorder, PTSD.

The Goal of Trauma Counselling

Trauma of any kind can numb us from a life of freedom and joy, and affects the most important relationship in life that we have: our relationship with ourselves. Our relationship with ourselves fosters our connections with others, which in turn increase our vitality. The goal of Trauma counselling is for you to—once again—be joyful, to feel a sense of freedom and to be liberated from what you experienced. Our experiences do not have to define us—it’s what we do about them that truly matters. The end result can be the gaining of perspective, strengthening of character, and understanding and respecting your self-worth, to name but a few. After undergoing post trauma counselling treatments, many clients ask themselves why they waited so long. Trauma Counselling using EMDR and CBT can help you to process your traumatic experience so that you can learn, grow and adapt; ultimately, you can reclaim your life.

Ready to take the next step?

When you cannot function as you have been able to previously; when you cannot engage in the relationships that fostered your sense of connection; when you cannot participate in your life with a sense of joy, hope and freedom, it is time to reach out to a mental health practitioner to help you process the trauma(s) so that you can regain your life and all of the connections to people and hobbies that inspired you to live with a sense of joy. Post trauma counselling can ensure that you recover your vitality by processing what happened to you in a safe therapeutic setting. vancouver trauma counsellor - jennifer mcintoshYou deserve to feel peaceful, calm and in control of your life!
